The journal "Bioethics" was established in 2008 as an interdisciplinary periodical issue for the discussion of philosophical, medical, legal, cultural, and social problems of bioethics. This is the first journal in Russia where the ethical component in biomedical researches and operations with real objects is still not institutionalized. The irony of the development of bioethics in Russia is that the work of our scientists in this area is widely recognized worldwide; the authority of the researchers like B.G.Yudin, P.D.Tischenko, I.V.Siluyanova and others is indisputable. And at the same time, in Russia there were no specialized periodicals where these authors and other specialists in the field of bioethics could be published, where scientific debates could be held, and new discoveries in bioethics could be discussed.

The founder of the journal is the Volgograd State Medical University, and it is not by coincidence.  The Volgograd State Medical University was the place where the first Russian Regional Independent Ethics Committee was established in 1993, and since 1998 the new discipline “bioethics” has been taught. At that time it was not a mandatory academic discipline, and bioethics was taught as an elective course. In 2001 Volgograd hosted the International seminar of the Council of Europe "Ethical Review of Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects", and this year Dissertation Council for a new scientific specialty “Sociology of medicine”, the first in Russia, was established in the Volgograd Medical University, and the field of its research included the problems of biomedical ethics. In 2005 the Department of the ethical and legal expertise in medicine was established on the basis of the Volgograd Medical Research Center. This department was also the first in Russia. Therefore, in 2008, the publication of the first issue of the federal scientific and practical journal "Bioethics" was the next necessary step in the development of national bioethics school. In 2010 this journal was included in the List of leading reviewed scientific journals and editions of the Higher attestation Commission of the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation for the publication of research results of candidate and doctoral dissertations, which is quite natural, since there is no science of the living which wouldn’t face ethical problems. Due to the journal the team of the Russian and foreign authors who regularly publish the results of their research was formed. Special sections of the journal are given for the publications of young scientists. It is pleasant to note that in the last 2 years the impact factor of our journal has been increased by 3 times.

Traditional sections of the journal are “Theoretical bioethics”, "Practical Bioethics”, “Applied Bioethics".  In addition to them there such sections as “Social Studies in Bioethics ", “New names in Bioethics", "Documents", "Events", "News".  Qualified reviewers not only evaluate incoming materials, but never refuse to help authors in spite of the fact that the editorial policy provides  a double-blind peer review, and reviewers and authors are not familiar with each other.  In accordance with its theme the journal complies strictly with the principles of voluntariness and confidentiality; advertising is not published, and all materials are printed free of charge.

The editorial staff holds regular roundtables on the current problems of bioethics; information on these problems is published in the next issue of the journal. All the work for the preparation and processing of materials, establishing contacts with authors is done by the members of the Russian Unit of International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, which has been opened in Volgograd recently.

Opening the new site of our journal, we hope that the number of its authors and readers will increase.

Please feel free to join us!
